Aamir Khan's 'Sitaare Zameen Par' Navigates Hurdles, Shines Bright with CBFC Clearance!

After a period of speculation and reported disagreements, Aamir Khan's highly anticipated film, Sitaare Zameen Par, has officially received its clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The U/A 13+ certificate has been granted, paving the way for the film's scheduled theatrical release on June 20, 2025.
Navigating the Certification Maze
The journey to certification wasn't entirely smooth for the Aamir Khan Productions venture. Reports had indicated that the initial Examining Committee of the CBFC suggested certain cuts that Aamir Khan, known for his meticulous and unyielding artistic vision, was reportedly unhappy with. This led to the matter being escalated to the Revising Committee (RC), chaired by Vaman Kendre.
The RC reviewed the film on Monday, June 16, and, after deliberations, mandated a few changes. These included:
- Replacing "Michael Jackson" with "Lovebirds" in a scene.
- Substituting "Business Woman" with "Business Person" for gender neutrality.
- Removing a visual featuring the word "Kamal" (lotus) due to political sensitivity.
- Replacing the original disclaimer with a new one, including a voiceover.
- Perhaps the most notable instruction was to incorporate a quote from Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the opening disclaimer, a somewhat uncommon directive for a Bollywood film.
Despite these adjustments, the film has now secured its censor certificate, ensuring its release as planned. The British Censor Board (BBFC) had previously certified the film with a 12A rating, indicating its suitability for viewers aged 12 and above.
A Spiritual Successor with a Fresh Story
Sitaare Zameen Par, directed by R.S. Prasanna, is a spiritual successor to Aamir Khan's critically acclaimed 2007 drama Taare Zameen Par. While the original explored the challenges faced by a child with dyslexia, this new film delves into themes of mental health and personal development within a unique setting.
Aamir Khan takes on the role of a basketball coach in the film, a departure from his previous portrayal as a teacher. The movie is an official remake of the 2018 Spanish film Champions (Campeones), which received widespread praise for its heartwarming narrative.
The film also stars Genelia Deshmukh in a pivotal role and introduces a talented ensemble of ten newcomers, including Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra, and Simran Mangeshkar. Aamir Khan's mother, Zeenat Hussain, and sister, Nikhat Khan, are also reported to make on-screen appearances.

Interestingly, Aamir Khan has made it clear that Sitaare Zameen Par will have an exclusive theatrical release, opting out of immediate streaming deals. Reports suggest he even turned down a significant offer from Amazon Prime Video, emphasizing his belief in the big-screen experience. This decision further adds to the anticipation surrounding the film, highlighting Khan's dedication to bringing audiences back to cinemas.
With a runtime of 2 hours and 38 minutes, Sitaare Zameen Par is poised to offer an emotional, layered, and challenging narrative, continuing Aamir Khan's tradition of socially conscious and impactful cinema. The resolution of its censorship journey means fans can now look forward to experiencing this highly anticipated film on the big screen.
