Original Spider-Man Back? The Batman Writer Pitches Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man 4!
NEWS RATING
The door to the multiverse remains wide open, and the web of speculation is tightening around the return of the Original Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire. Following his celebrated comeback in Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans have relentlessly called for a proper Spider-Man 4 to conclude his story. Now, a major Hollywood screenwriter has dropped a hopeful hint, suggesting the concept for a mature Peter Parker is actively being discussed.

The Writer’s Cryptic But Optimistic Update
The latest surge in Spider-Man 4 rumors comes courtesy of Mattson Tomlin, the co-writer of The Batman (2022) and the upcoming The Batman: Part II. Tomlin, who has publicly campaigned to write the script, recently offered a cautious but significant update on the development.

When a fan on X (formerly Twitter) asked if there had been any movement on his Spider-Man 4 pitch, Tomlin replied:

"Slow and steady wins the race. There won't be anything to say about that for a long time (if ever!) because it involves a lot of people and politics and things going right that have nothing to do with me, but I haven't gotten a 'no' yet!"

This subtle remark—that the idea has not been officially rejected—is the strongest indication yet that discussions are ongoing at a high level within Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios regarding the fate of the Sam Raimi trilogy's Peter Parker.

A New Vision: Spider-Man as a Husband and Father
Tomlin's enthusiasm for the project stems from a desire to explore Peter Parker in a profoundly new stage of life. His compelling pitch is centered on an older, more emotionally complex hero:
  • The Story Arc: "Honestly, right now my main interest in this respect would be to write a Spider-Man 4 where Tobey's Spider-Man is juggling being a husband and a father."
  • Thematically Rich: Tomlin explicitly stated, "Spider-Man as a father is where I gravitate towards, given the last eight films," suggesting a desire to move beyond the traditional origin story and explore themes of legacy, family responsibility, and aging within the superhero genre.

This narrative concept perfectly aligns with the character's journey glimpsed in No Way Home and the long-held fan desire to see Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson (played by Kirsten Dunst, who has also expressed interest in returning) navigate parenthood and a more balanced life.

Why The Demand For Spider-Man 4 Is Unstoppable

The original Spider-Man 4 directed by Sam Raimi was famously canceled in 2011 due to creative differences, leaving the beloved trilogy without a proper conclusion. Tobey Maguire's emotional return in 2021 reignited that dormant desire for closure.
  • Closure for the Trilogy: Fans believe Maguire’s Peter Parker, who inspired a generation of comic book movie fans, deserves a final, standalone chapter that resolves his personal life and confirms his "happily ever after."
  • An Open Multiverse: No Way Home confirmed that any version of Spider-Man can appear, giving Sony and Marvel the freedom to produce a separate, non-MCU Spider-Man 4 alongside the development of Tom Holland's next film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
  • Original Cast Interest: Not only is the acclaimed director Sam Raimi open to a return, but Kirsten Dunst has also expressed enthusiasm for playing a more mature Mary Jane.
While the process is slow and fraught with studio "politics," as Tomlin himself noted, the fact that a prominent writer's pitch for a new Tobey Maguire film hasn't been shut down is a massive win for fans and keeps the hope for Spider-Man 4 very much alive.
