Sooraj Barjatya, the celebrated filmmaker known for his family-centric dramas, has opened up about the complexities of working with his long-time collaborator, Salman Khan. In a recent interview, Barjatya revealed that making a film with the superstar at this stage of his career has become a significant "challenge." The director, who has given Salman some of his most iconic roles as "Prem," stated that finding a "relevant and fresh" subject that suits the actor's age and current standing is the biggest hurdle.

The legendary partnership between Sooraj Barjatya and Salman Khan spans over three decades and includes some of Bollywood's biggest blockbusters like Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, Hum Saath Saath Hain, and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. These films defined Salman's "Prem" persona—a soft-spoken, family-oriented romantic hero.

 

However, the director's recent comments reveal a new phase in their creative collaboration. Barjatya confessed that a planned action film with Salman had to be shelved because he was "unable to crack the climax or get the character" right. This indicates a creative block, as the filmmaker feels that certain subjects no longer align with the actor's age or appeal. For a director who only makes a film when he is fully convinced, this creative roadblock is a serious one.

 

Barjatya also touched upon Salman's recent films, which have not performed as well at the box office. He was quick to defend the actor, stating that he is optimistic about Salman making a huge comeback.

Sooraj Barjatya is working on a new family drama, reportedly titled Prem Ki Shaadi, starring Ayushmann Khurrana, who will now take on the role of "Prem." This marks a significant shift for the director's production house, Rajshri Productions, and signals a move to modernize the "Prem" character for a younger audience. Meanwhile, Salman Khan is busy with his upcoming war drama, Battle of Galwan.

 

This hiatus highlights the evolution of both artists—Salman as a superstar who has diversified his roles and Sooraj Barjatya as a filmmaker who is willing to adapt to changing times and find new ways to tell his stories.
